Our physicians and staff genuinely care about the well-being of our patients, and are committed to making healthcare decisions and recommendations which are always based on what is best for the patient.

ICAEL Accreditation

The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) provides facility accreditation programs for echocardiography. The ICAEL is a member division of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). The IAC is comprised of six member divisions, each ensuring quality patient care and promoting health care within a specific medical specialty, all dedicated to one common mission: improving health care through accreditation.

ICAEL sets standards for echo labs, cardiologists and technologists to provide high quality care. Serving as the basis for the accreditation program, the ICAEL Standards are an extensive document defining the minimal requirements for echocardiography laboratories to provide high quality care. Every two years, the Standards are reviewed by the ICAEL Board of Directors and revised as needed. The Standards are used by laboratories as both a guideline and the foundation to create and achieve realistic quality care goals. The document includes standards for:

  • Staff, including the medical director, technical director, medical and technical staff
  • Physical facilities (laboratory space)
  • Examination data archiving, examination reports and laboratory records
  • Laboratory safety and patient confidentiality
  • Quality assurance
  • Instrumentation
  • Indications, ordering process and scheduling
  • Elements and components of examination performance
  • Examination interpretation
  • Procedure volumes

Details of the specific standards in each area are available on the ICAEL website at http://www.icael.org/icael/main/icael_standards.htm.

Designed to serve laboratories as an educational tool, ICAEL accreditation is made up of two crucial steps. First, laboratories conduct a detailed self-evaluation using the ICAEL Standards and the application. Completion of the application requires detailed information on all aspects of laboratory operation as well as the submission of actual case studies for review. The case studies are crucial in determining the laboratory's compliance with the Standards, and are the basis for judgment of the quality of work that laboratories perform. Once the self-evaluation is completed, the documents and case studies are reviewed by the ICAEL Board of Directors. All aspects of the review are confidential.

ICAEL also further monitors for continued compliance by accredited laboratories with a policy requiring all accredited laboratories to undergo an audit or site visit at some time during their three-year accreditation period. This is in response to the requirements sanctioned by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for CMS appointed Accreditation Organizations as part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA).

Southern California Heart Centers has been an ICAEL-accredited echocardiography laboratory for adult echocardiogram and stress echocardiogram since 2003.
